Passive Fire Protection - For Safer Buildings

tremco illbruck provides Passive Fire Protection (sometimes also referred as PFP) solutions for the construction industry. Specifiers, designers, facilities managers, contractors and installers can access both support and products from one source. We are specialists, with one focus that has not and will not change – to protect people and buildings from fire. Passive Fire Protection is highly complex but crucially important, especially as buildings become more sophisticated.

We offer market leading intumescent coatings for the protection of steel structures and fire stopping solutions to construction movement joints, gaps and service penetrations.

How Does Passive Fire Protection Work?

There are two different types of fire protection methods; Active and Passive Fire Protection:

What Does Active Fire Protection Mean?

Active Fire Protection consists of the fire detection and extinguishing systems (detectors, sprinklers, fire extinguishers etc.) that set an alarm to warn of fire or help to suppress the fire locally.

What Does Passive Fire Protection Mean?

Passive Fire Protection consists of built in solutions that have been installed in the building structure, to allow the structure of the building to resist the effects of fire for a defined period of time. It is called Passive Fire Protection because it functions without any human intervention or external energy supply, in the event of a fire.

Thus, the Passive Fire Protection Solutions will:

  • Inhibit the passage of flames, heat, smoke and toxic gases
  • Help to maintain the stability and integrity of the building’s structural elements

Passive Fire Protection is required in most buildings, domestic and non-domestic. All building works whether they are new builds, refurbishments or extensions, must follow the building regulations pertinent to the local area. To cover all the Passive Fire Protection requirements of a building, we offer two distinct solutions:
