Areas of application for adhesives
Construction adhesives can be used to bond plastics, metals, plaster, concrete, glass, insulating materials, tiles or cork to one another. These are particularly frequently used amongst tradespeople for window installations or façade cladding work, both for interior construction or supply engineering purposes.
Adhesives are used in industry for automotive, shipbuilding and aircraft construction, shoemaking, glass processing and bookbinding. Advantages of adhesives compared with other bonding techniques
In many cases, using adhesives is preferable to other bonding and joining techniques such as drilling and screwing, welding or soldering.
In lightweight construction, for example, hybrid adhesives allow lighter components to be bonded, which would be impossible in other circumstances. Insulating materials such as polystyrene or rigid foam boards, for example, would lose their strength if screws were used.
This technique also has other advantages. Applying the adhesive does not produce noise or dust. Adhesion makes installation easier and is associated with fewer safety risks and risks of injury than drilling or welding. There is also no need to use expensive tools.
Another positive quality of adhesives is that they do not change the surface characteristics of the material. Prerequisites for selecting and using construction adhesives
First of all, the characteristics of the surface or material in question are decisive for selecting the right adhesive. The following questions may be helpful in this: is the material wood, glass, metal or plaster? Is the surface rough or even? Structural requirements and environmental influences also play a part: is the adhesive required for use in an internal or external area? Does the hybrid adhesive need to be water-resistant or heat-resistant? Which loads and tensions can be expected?
The product qualities need to be verified prior to use: how does the adhesive harden? Does the adhesive require a layer which is permeable to solvents? Does strain hardening take place in the absence of oxygen? The use of materials such as polymer or hybrid adhesives is also limited by temperature. If the temperatures are too low or too high, the load-bearing capacity of the adhesion may be weakened.
When using the products there are also other points to take into account. On the one hand, a sufficiently large area for adhesion is necessary and the adhesive layer itself should be applied as evenly as possible. Peak areas of tension are to be avoided. The bond must take place in such a way that it is only placed under strain when jolted or subjected to pressure. Otherwise, the adhesive may creep and the adhesion may be lost after a certain point. When correctly used, adhesives can provide even distribution of tension and balanced transmission of force.
