A customised bonding solution for window installation

Today it is almost possible to make a complete transition from drilling to bonding for installation work; in interior design, utility supply technology, façade wall cladding and also window installation. This is made possible thanks to a wide product range and specialised concepts.

As not all adhesives are the same, material and surface characteristics, structural requirements and the load type should be taken into consideration when selecting the right one.

In order to make it easier to select an adhesive, tremco illbruck offers product range concepts which are designed to work together, covering entire areas of application, rather than just individual steps within a job. Planners and installers benefit from these innovative solutions which cater for all eventualities and specific needs.

The range is made up of both classic and hybrid adhesives and is particularly suitable for tension-equalising connections.

Why drill when you could bond?

As a future-oriented company, we are able to say: Bonding is the new drilling!

In most cases, drilling is no longer necessary in construction work, even if it continues to be done. Time and cost savings, safe installation and lasting quality and adhesion make professional adhesives an attractive and innovative alternative to drilling. Do you need technical advice on bonding? Our qualified team will be happy to advise you over the telephone or on site in your office, workshop or building site.

Installation made easy: Bonding is the new drilling!

Dust, noise and safety risks: drilling work is always a negative factor in any installation job. As it is time consuming, drilling is costly and handling the drill can lead to accidents in the workplace. Expenditure and safety risks such as these can unnecessarily push construction costs up.

The formula for success for installation work: Stop drilling, start bonding!

We have developed flexible and stable adhesives for a variety of applications for use by the construction sector, skilled trades and industry. These adhesives are notable for their strong, rapid initial adhesion properties, making child's play of bonding a wide variety of materials to many different sub-surfaces. Even plaster, metals, glass and insulating material no longer pose a problem. As the adhesives are so easy to handle, installation work becomes easier and less time-consuming. This often means that high costs can be reduced.

Larger property management firms have also changed their approach by using bonding instead of drilling in their properties for sanitary items, plastic wall installations and other equipment which is in constant use. The benefits are clear:when a tenant moves out, no holes will be left behind in the walls or tiles, which would otherwise have to be filled at a cost. The property will not be constantly damaged, meaning that its value remains intact.

Diverse areas of application and options

Adhesives can be used to bond almost any material to another. They have a broad range of uses in construction, trades and in industry, as they have numerous benefits compared with other bonding techniques. As long as certain prerequisites are met prior to use, there is nothing to prevent them achieving the desired result.

Qualities of high-quality adhesives

Adhesives can be divided into various groups depending on their characteristics and areas of application. There are four categories which are split according to chemical characteristics natural organic compounds, synthetic organic compounds, silicons and inorganic compounds.:

They can also be distinguished according to their strengthening mechanisms. The first category includes physically bonding adhesives such as dispersion and water-based construction adhesives. The second group includes chemically hardening adhesives such as hybrid-polymer adhesives, which are also referred to as polymer adhesives or hybrid adhesives. The third group encompasses adhesives with no curing mechanism, particularly pressure-sensitive adhesives.

There are also elastic and stable adhesives. Some are able to withstand heavy strains, others are not, some are water resistant or heat resistant. Which adhesive is suitable for each situation depends on the area of application amongst other factors, the specifications which are required and the surface qualities of the materials which are to be bonded to one another.

Areas of application for adhesives

Construction adhesives can be used to bond plastics, metals, plaster, concrete, glass, insulating materials, tiles or cork to one another. These are particularly frequently used amongst tradespeople for window installations or façade cladding work, both for interior construction or supply engineering purposes.

Adhesives are used in industry for automotive, shipbuilding and aircraft construction, shoemaking, glass processing and bookbinding. Here, polyurethane adhesives in particular create the necessary material compounds. Dual component adhesives bond plastics and metals. Phenolic resins are used for structural wood bonding or brake shoes and clutch linings.

Advantages of adhesives compared with other bonding techniques

In many cases, using adhesives is preferable to other bonding and joining techniques such as drilling and screwing, welding or soldering.

In lightweight construction, for example, hybrid adhesives allow lighter components to be bonded, which would be impossible in other circumstances. Insulating materials such as polystyrene or rigid foam boards, for example, would lose their strength if screws were used.

This technique also has other advantages. Applying the adhesive does not produce noise or dust. Adhesion makes installation easier and is associated with fewer safety risks and risks of injury than drilling or welding. There is also no need to use expensive tools.

Another positive quality of adhesives is that they do not change the surface characteristics of the material. For this reason, large housing associations have switched to using adhesives for sanitary fittings, plastic wall fittings and other frequently-used items in their properties. Walls and tiles remain free from damage in the living space and the value of the building is retained in the long-term.

Prerequisites for selecting and using construction adhesives

First of all, the characteristics of the surface or material in question are decisive for selecting the right adhesive. The following questions may be helpful in this: is the material wood, glass, metal or plaster? Is the surface rough or even? Structural requirements and environmental influences also play a part: is the adhesive required for use in an internal or external area? Does the hybrid adhesive need to be water-resistant or heat-resistant? Which loads and tensions can be expected?

The product qualities need to be verified prior to use: how does the adhesive harden? Does the adhesive require a layer which is permeable to solvents? Does strain hardening take place in the absence of oxygen? The use of materials such as polymer or hybrid adhesives is also limited by temperature. If the temperatures are too low or too high, the load-bearing capacity of the adhesion may be weakened.

When using the products there are also other points to take into account. On the one hand, a sufficiently large area for adhesion is necessary and the adhesive layer itself should be applied as evenly as possible. Peak areas of tension are to be avoided. The bond must take place in such a way that it is only placed under strain when jolted or subjected to pressure. Otherwise, the adhesive may creep and the adhesion may be lost after a certain point. When correctly used, adhesives can provide even distribution of tension and balanced transmission of force.

As each product and each sub-surface has its own requirements, we recommend that a detailed analysis of all the factors is carried out.

Professional products for different areas of application

In many cases, adhesion can replace drilling in construction. Time and cost savings, security in installation as well as long-lasting quality and adhesive strength make professional construction adhesives an attractive and innovative alternative to drilling. But an adhesive is not just an adhesive. The qualities of materials and surfaces, structural requirements and the type of load determine which adhesive is most suitable.

In order to simplify product selection, tremco illbruck offers system solutions which are tailored to work together and which cover entire areas of application, rather than just individual steps in the process. In addition, the company is developing hybrid adhesives which combine the positive mechanical qualities of polyurethane with the applied features of silicone and therefore permit their use in numerous areas of application. Planners and installers benefit from innovative solutions which take account of all eventualities and specific circumstances.

With the brand Pactan and their customised bonding and sealing solutions, tremco illbruck is particularly aiming at the processing industries. This includes electronic products, the installation of external thermal insulation composite systems or household devices.  For the automotive industry, the company produces composite films and foam strips which it constantly further develops and adapts to changed technological progress.
