TREMCO technology transmitting the loads within restructured London Bridge


The redevelopment of London Bridge Station over the past decade has been one of the most complex transport infrastructure projects ever executed in the capital, with tremco illbruck having been involved from the earliest stages, supplying both standard and bespoke movement joints, and assisting with the design process as the project progressed.


Building on its international track record in construction technology, TREMCO is the exclusive brand partner in the UK for Migua Movement Joints; leading to the supply of products worth £400K in the period from 2013-2018, and the company’s cooperation with most of the consultants involved, as well as Network Rail and main contractor, Costain Group.

The physical challenges of this vast project have been made more complex by the need to maintain access for the millions of passengers using one of the capital’s busiest stations; as well as all of the forces to be accommodated from not just dead loads and the dynamic movement of trains.

During the various phases, tremco illbruck has supplied hundreds of high capacity movement joints for the construction of 15 new platforms, the station concourse and plaza with its retail and catering outlets. Also addressed were such areas as the lift thresholds, staircases, escalator/platform interfaces and the many hidden maintenance spaces.

Amongst the many architectural practices, consulting engineers and specialist contractors that tremco illbruck liaised with were Grimshaw, Lorclon Ltd., Vetter and DMC Contracts Ltd: the Tilbury based specialist in floor and wall tiling.

A spokesperson for the project team commented: “This has been a technically very demanding contract, during which all 15 of the platforms and access for the 130,000 commuters each day, have been rebuilt using a combination of in-situ and precast concrete.

“The tender to supply movement joints was won by TREMCO based on the brand’s reputation for quality and the company’s past record on projects such as the regeneration of Kings Cross Station and building Heathrow Terminal 5.”

Overall, tremco illbruck provided a total of 15 different joint profiles able to accommodate movement along three axes, offering resistance to water penetration, corrosion and static electricity. Amongst the special adaptations supplied by tremco illbruck and its German partner, Migua, were TREMCO FS75 and TREMCO FSV 285 all metal expansion joints for heavy duty applications; as well as the TREMCO EE3 with special extension plates to facilitate fixing.

In addition to design liaison with both the architectural practices and contractors, tremco illbruck provided site support throughout the project to help the installers overcome interface issues with waterproofing, and the many different floor finishes.
